Fitting Room Notes · Shapewear 101
How to Choose the Faja That Finally Works on Your Body
If shapewear has ever rolled down, dug in, flattened your curves or lived in a drawer after two wears — you didn't fail at it. You were sold the wrong build. Here's how to pick yours like a fitter would.
In this guide
01 — The frustration
You've already bought shapewear. It's in the drawer.
You remember the moment: the dress zipped, you turned sideways in the mirror, and something still wasn't right. The waistband rolled down by lunch. The seams printed through your outfit. It squeezed your hips flat instead of shaping your waist. Or it simply hurt — so you took it off in the car and never wore it again.
And underneath the frustration is the part nobody says out loud: you start to wonder whether the problem is your body.
It isn't. Shapewear that fails almost always fails for one of four boring, fixable reasons.
-
It rolls down
Not enough torso coverage for your shape — the garment has nothing to anchor to.
-
It digs and pinches
Usually a size too small, or thin fabric doing a structured garment's job.
-
You see no real change
Sized up "for comfort," so the compression never actually engages.
-
It fights your day
No restroom opening, wrong straps, wrong length for the outfit you own.
02 — The reframe
Stop shopping by "light, medium, firm."
Most brands sort shapewear by compression level, which leaves you guessing how much squeeze you can survive. At Aryella there's nothing to guess: every garment is made in Colombia from premium Powernet and Lycra, and every one delivers firm, high compression when you wear your correct size.
So the real question isn't how strong. It's how the garment is built — and what it's built to do for your body. A front zipper, a reinforced abdominal panel, three rows of adjustable hooks, flexible steel boning: those are the differences you actually feel at hour eight.
Choose the engineering, and the fit, the comfort and the results follow.
Colombian-made
Crafted where faja engineering was invented.
Powernet & Lycra
Holds its shape wash after wash — no sag.
Built to adjust
Hook rows follow your body as it changes.
03 — Step one
Name your real goal — out loud
This is the step most women skip, and it's the reason they end up with the wrong garment. Be honest about which of these you're actually shopping for today.
Everyday smoothing
You want your jeans, work dresses and knits to sit clean — every single morning, with zero fuss.
Go simple: front zipper
Tummy support
The midsection is your focus — after babies, after surgery, or simply because that's where you want help.
Go reinforced: abdominal panel
Waist definition
You want that curve — a visibly cinched waist now, and progress with consistent daily wear.
Go structured: steel boning
Recovery stage
You're post-op or postpartum and moving through stages — gentle first, firmer as you heal.
Go by stage: 1 → 2 → 3
A note on stages. Stage 1 is soft, gentle compression for the first weeks of healing. Stage 2 and 3 are high-compression garments for shaping, definition and long-term wear — and they're exactly what non-surgical customers want, too. If you haven't had surgery, you can start at Stage 2.
04 — Step two
Match your goal to a collection
Three families, three levels of engineering. Same firm compression, same Colombian construction — different amount of structure and adjustability.
For the woman who wants shaping she never has to think about
The pain it solves: you dread the wrestling match. Ten minutes, two mirrors, and a garment you can barely get over your hips — so you stop reaching for it.
Signature is our classic everyday faja: a front zipper closure with a single row of hooks, so you step in, zip up, and get on with your morning. It delivers the same firm, high compression Aryella is known for, in the most streamlined build we make.
Best for
- Everyday wear, work, jeans and dresses
- First-time faja users
- Post-surgery Stage 2 & postpartum
- Smooth shaping with minimum fuss
The engineering
- Front zipper, one hook row
- Premium Powernet & Lycra
- Firm, high compression
- Seamless silhouette under clothes
For the woman who wants more tummy support and room to adjust
The pain it solves: your midsection is the part you want help with — and your body doesn't stay the same all month, let alone all year. A garment that fits in January feels wrong by spring, and you're back to square one.
Hourglass adds two things Signature doesn't have: a reinforced abdominal support panel that holds and smooths the midsection, and three rows of hook-and-eye closures behind the zipper so you can tighten the fit as your body changes. Same firm compression — noticeably more waist definition.
Best for
- Extra tummy support
- Post-surgery Stage 2 & 3 and postpartum
- Daily waist shaping and long-term wear
- Bodies that are still changing
The engineering
- Reinforced abdominal panel
- Three adjustable hook rows
- Enhanced waist definition
- Strapless, thin-strap and knee-length options
For the woman who wants a serious curve — and holds it all day
The pain it solves: soft shapewear collapses at the waist. You cinch, it creases, and by evening the curve you loved in the fitting room has gone soft — along with your posture.
UltraShape is our most structured build: flexible steel boning rods plus three rows of adjustable hooks hold the waistline exactly where you set it, add real posture support, and give waist training the consistency it needs to show results.
Best for
- Maximum waist definition
- Structured waist training
- Extra back and posture support
- Anyone who loves a corset-inspired hold
The engineering
- Flexible steel boning rods
- Three adjustable hook rows
- Ultra-firm hold at the waistline
- Full-body and waist-trainer styles
05 — Cheat sheet
"I want ___." Here's what to wear.
Find the sentence that sounds like you, then click straight through to the style.
| If you want… | We recommend | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Waist definition only | Hourglass Waist Trainer | Targets the midsection without full-body coverage — wear it under anything. |
| Easy everyday full-body shaping | Signature Full Body Faja | Front zipper and one hook row: firm compression, fastest to put on. |
| Extra tummy support + back smoothing | Hourglass Full Body, High-Back | Reinforced abdominal panel plus a higher back that smooths the bra line. |
| Strapless or low-cut outfits | Hourglass Strapless Faja Shorts | Stays secure with no visible straps — built for necklines that show skin. |
| Discreet shoulder support | Hourglass Faja, Thin Straps | Barely-there straps keep the garment anchored under tanks and knits. |
| Long dresses & thigh smoothing | Hourglass Knee-Length Faja | Extends compression through the thighs so nothing rubs or ripples. |
| Maximum waist structure | UltraShape Waist Trainer Corset | Nine steel boning rods hold the curve and keep your posture upright. |
| Light smoothing under jeans | Butt Lifting Shaper Shorts | Flattens the tummy and lifts the glutes without full-torso compression. |
06 — Step three
Choose your details — they decide whether you wear it
The collection decides how much structure you get. These small features decide whether the faja fits your real wardrobe and your real day.
Higher back
Smooths the upper back and underarm area. Choose it if fitted tops or bodycon dresses show lines you don't love.
Thin straps
Discreet shoulder support that keeps the garment from sliding down — ideal for everyday outfits.
Removable straps
One faja, many necklines. Clip them on for support, take them off for a strapless dress.
Strapless
Silicone lining and firm side panels hold it in place for off-the-shoulder tops and evening wear.
Restroom-friendly
Depending on the style, a discreet overlap opening or a zipper gusset — so a bathroom break isn't a full undress.
Length
Shorts for jeans and skirts, mid-thigh for everyday, knee-length for maxi dresses and thigh smoothing.
07 — Step four
The mistake that ruins the right faja: sizing up
It feels logical. Shapewear is snug, so you order a size up to be comfortable — and then wonder why you see almost no difference in the mirror. High compression only works at your true size. A size too big can't hold your midsection, so it rolls, shifts and disappoints. A size too small hurts, and you won't wear it twice.
One honest exception: if this is your first compression garment and you simply want something you'll actually keep on, sizing up is a fair choice. You'll trade some shaping for comfort — but a faja you wear every day beats a firmer one that stays in the drawer. Start there, then move down a size when you're ready for more.
And know this: Powernet softens with wear. The first few days it can feel rigid, almost unforgiving — that's the fabric at full strength, not a sign of the wrong size. As you wear it, the Lycra gives just enough to mould to your body, and the same garment that felt like a wrestling match in week one slips on easily by week three, without losing its hold.
Measure before you order. It takes ninety seconds and it's the difference between a garment you love and a garment you return.
-
1
Measure your waist
At the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button. Tape snug, not pulled tight, and don't suck in.
-
2
Measure your hips
Around the fullest part of your hips and glutes, with the tape level all the way around.
-
3
Between two sizes? Follow the larger measurement
If your waist and hips point to different sizes, go with the size your hips need — then use the hook rows to tighten the waist. That's exactly what they're for.
Every product page carries its own size chart. Compare your two numbers to that chart, not to your dress size.
The first two weeks
Break it in the right way — and it becomes your favourite thing
High compression is a relationship, not a shock. Give your body two weeks and the garment starts to feel like support instead of pressure.
Start on the loosest hook row
Work inward over the weeks as your body adjusts. Never begin on the tightest row.
Build up your hours
Two to three hours a day at first, then gradually up to six or eight as your tolerance grows.
Wear a thin cotton layer
A breathable camisole underneath absorbs sweat and protects your skin from friction.
Listen to your body
Take it off if you feel shortness of breath, dizziness or sharp pain. Compression should never hurt.
08 — Answers
The questions our fitters hear every day
Can I wear a Stage 2 or 3 faja without surgery, just to shape and waist train?
Absolutely. Stage 2 and 3 fajas are made from high-compression Powernet and — in UltraShape — built with structural boning, which makes them excellent for defining the waist, smoothing the abdomen and improving posture. Because you have no surgical incisions, you can skip the gentle Stage 1 phase entirely and start at Stage 2.
They're also anatomically cut to compress the midsection while leaving the hips and glutes shaped rather than flattened — which is exactly what you want for everyday shaping.
Signature or Hourglass — how do I decide?
Both give you firm, high compression. Choose Signature if ease matters most: one hook row plus a zipper, on and off in seconds. Choose Hourglass if you want more tummy support and adjustability — a reinforced abdominal panel and three hook rows that let you tighten the fit over time.
Will a faja show under my clothes?
In your correct size, no. Lines usually appear for one of two reasons: the garment is too small, so fabric edges press into you, or the length ends exactly where your outfit is tightest. For bodycon dresses, choose a longer length and a higher back so the hem sits past the fitted area.
How long until I see waist training results?
The shaping effect is instant — you'll see it the first time you zip up. Lasting definition comes from consistency: daily wear over weeks, moving inward through the hook rows as your body responds. Structured UltraShape styles hold the curve most reliably, which is why waist trainers live in that collection.
Can I use the restroom without taking everything off?
Yes. Depending on the style, your faja has either a discreet overlap opening or a zipper gusset that extends toward the glute area — both designed so restroom visits don't mean removing the whole garment. Check the style's description for which one it uses.
How do I wash it so it keeps its compression?
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, close the zipper and hooks first, never wring it, and lay it flat to dry away from direct heat. Heat and harsh cycles are what break down Lycra — treat it gently and it holds its shape for a long time.
